My story is very short. Each morning before leaving home for school my friends and I would go into our gardens to collect schrapnel that had fallen from the skies following the anti aircraft guns firing on the doodlebugs.Their flight path crossed over us on their way to London. We often saw them exploding after dark.We would swap our cllections which also included pieces of metal from crashed aircraft.
We had two near misses when one flying bomr took the cross off the top of St Michael's church next to our house and a second doodle bug crashed on Madstone West railway station about half a mile distant. Isaw it coming down as I cycled round our garden. Needless to say I fell off.
