this story was submitted to the people's war site by a pupil at Esher High School on behalf of (Veteran's name)and has been added to the site with his/her permission. (veteran's name)fully understands the site's terms and conditions. After serving in the air force on the first Avro Manchester squadron 207 at Waddington we changed to Lancaster Bombers and we were moved to RAF Bottesford. In march 1943 we were posted to RAF Scampton to a new squadron being bomed for a special purpose little did we know at the time that this turned out to be the most famous bomber squadron of the RAF 614 squadron the Dambusters then got meet one the great inventonns of the time Barnes Wallis who was walking on his theory of destroying at least three of the major German Dams! Wich controlled much of the water flow in the Rhur Valley. Although the target was kept a very close secret. The squadron came into bieng long before the bomb was actually functioning so although the squadron was commited to this raid , the bomb was yet to be proved however Barnes Wllis was fond to be right and although are losses were high the main objective was achieved and then Mr Wallis was able to carry on with his other bomb projects including the Grandslam wich was a world away from a 60ft drop onto the dam walls. When i left the air force i joined the Vickers Armstrongs at brooklands where he worked as head of reasearch and develompment engineer andit was special for me to know him for the rest of his working life.Of the origanal aircrew of 617 there are only five left and i was honered a month ago to spend a weekend with them at Aces High Gallery.
