I was twelve years old when war broke out on the 3rd September 1939. We were all issued with gas masks and ration books. Food was rationed and clothing coupons were given out. Food was scarce, dried eggs-dried milk-dried potato. All windows had to be blackout. Air raid wardens used to come round calling, ‘put that light out!’ We had lots of foreign soldiers and girls married lots of them. People were a lot more friendly than now. Everybody used to help each other. All my three brothers were in the forces. The air raid sirens used to let us know of air raids. People sang lovely songs when outside, music requests were played for the forces.
