If this were the late 1930's, Doris Lowden would be out on the town. She would often go to a dance hall on Scotswood Road in Newcastle with her good friend Kitty Arthur and a group of other girls from their neighbourhood. "The dance hall was called Billy Wheeler's, it used to be a cinema," Doris recalls. " I knew Billy and he was a lovely lad." Doris, Kitty and their friends would go to the dance hall almost every night, singing and dancing. At half time they would go to a pork shop next door for pork sandwiches and pies. However, as Doris recalls, when war broke out she soon had to move to Morpeth and her days of going out with Kitty and the girls ended for a while. "I was sad to leave," Doris says. "It was a marvellous time and I have no regrets. I've enjoyed my damn self."
