As children my wife and I lived in rural Shropshire — what is now Telford. The only worthwhile target there in was the Central Ordnance Depot at Donnington. This was raided many times, always at night. Even as five year olds we soon recognised the different drones of aircraft engines and the relief felt when someone said ‘It’s one of ours!’

Then of course we had those gas masks to wear at school. I remember my mother queuing for hours at a Wellington butchers for chitterlings and tripe! The only food I still refuse to eat nowadays.
