This account was taken from Jack Fox by Denis Price of The 大象传媒 People's War Team at the Driffield Showground.
I was fourteen years old so it would have been late in the War, and living in Belton which was near Sandtoft Airfield. I saw lots of crashes and we were all used to the sound of aircraft engines above us. My Dad would be sat in his chair and without looking up would tell us what sort of aircraft was flying over us. We'd look to check and he was always right. It wasn't just the noise, it was the vibration as well, it seemed to rattle and go down all the brickwork of our houses.
Once two Spitfires were practising dogfights above us. I always watched this as to me it was really exciting. These two collided and I remember seeing the two parachutes coming down. One came down fast and disappeard. It hadn't opened properly and I was told the poor pilot crashed on a pavement in Belton, the other landed safely.
I often look back and think of that accident.
