My mother was bathing me in April 1940, when our new house in Southampton was hit directly with a bomb. Mother picked me up and rushed to the bathroom window and saw a young airman running towards the house. She shouted to the airman to catch me and then threw me at him from the 1st floor, fortunately he caught me and my father and mother ran out of the house.
Mother then broke down crying that she had left her wedding and engagement rings on the bathroom windowsill. So my father ran back into the blazing house to rescue them and succeeded in severely burning his arms. We had to leave Southampton and became evacuees in Winchester.
