(This story was submitted to the People's War site by a volunteer from ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Suffolk on behalf of Nancy Colchester and has been added to the site with her permission. Mrs Colchester fully understands the site's terms and conditions).
The South Africa Brigadier had arrived in Kenya. He arrived by air at Nairobi airport with his staff. I was stationed at Air Head Quarters as a driver in the F.A.N.Ys (First Aid Nursing Yeomanry). I was commissioned to go and meet him and take him to his quarters at one of the hotels in Nairobi.
As there was a shortage of vehicles and cars were desperately needed we were told to return promptly. Having driven to the hotel with the Brigadier and his staff I waited for them to return and dismiss me. After fifteen minutes, and no sign of the Brigadier’s staff, I thought it best to drive to my next assignment, not realising the Brigadier’s luggage was still in the boot!
Soon there was frantic messages, ‘Where is the Brigadier’s luggage and where is Lance Corporal Colchester?’ Very red faced I drove back to the hotel with many apologies, but all was forgiven in war time.
