My father was a fireman in Hull during the war - Hull was badly blitzed and my mother and my sister and I were moved out to a village outside Hull whilst my dad stayed in Hull. He was not allowed outside the Hull boundary and so he used to cycle to the outskirts and my mum would cycle to meet him, with my young sister on a pillion seat. On this occasion they were cycling down Beverley road when they heard a plane, not realising it was a German fighter plane. The next recollection was the sound of gun fire - the fighter pilot was flying low down the road and shooting at them. They rushed into a doorway to try to get some protection - fortunately the fighter pilot decided not to pursue his 'game'! A near miss!!
