This story has been collected by George Highley, Jacob Anderson-Small, Sam Weltzein and Joe Beeson with the assistance of Sue Flowers, Green Close Studios and has been added to the site by Anne Wareing of the Lancs. Home Guard.
Mrs Fawcett was born in South Muskum in Nottinghamshire. Her father worked in a ball bearing factory where he was in charge of quality. Her mother taught for a short time in the war but stayed at home for most of the war.
The nearest bomb that fell was at the ball bearing factory in Newark. Her father was in the home guard and was captain of the AA guns.
Mrs Fawcett lived in a flat area of Nottinghamshire so there were aerodromes every five miles. The buses were few and far between so they didn鈥檛 have mush to do after dark.
Shrapnel landed on the village as the bombers were returning to Germany. When the bombers came over, if you were outside you ran for cover.
You could recognise the sound of the bombers, as it was a dull ominous sound.
