(This story was submitted to the Peoples War website by a volunteer from Radio Cambridgeshire Action Desk) at Barnabus Court on behalf of Marie Belcher and has been added to the site with her permission. Mrs Belcher fully understands the site's terms and conditions).

We lived in a little village in Kent and where I lived was about a mile and a half up a lane from the main village. It was in the path of the doodlebugs. When you could hear the sound of the engines you knew you were alright, but on one day the engines stopped and it came down and fell down the well of the farm house that was opposite us. It exploded and it blew the farm up killing the family; husband and wife and 14 year old girl. The girl landed dead in the tree, hanging from her long hair. Luckily for us our house was okay with only a few shattered windows. I was so scared, I dreaded seeing or hearing the doddlebugs ever again, but sadly we did hear them a lot as it was a regular route for them to fly over. After that we carried on as usual, you had to go about your everyday things.

On the day I met my husband who had just come home after being a Prisoner of War in Japan I was walking home from the town after going to the cinema with Ted鈥檚 sister. I had left my cycle at Ted鈥檚 house so I was going to collect it. I arranged to meet him again, he was all tanned with black curly hair, and he looked wonderful. So we started dating and now over 59 years later we鈥檙e still married and happy as that day with 2 grown up married sons as well. To this day we鈥檝e never even had a row.
