I was in domestic service at Melton, when the war broke. My home was at Blaxhall. On my 21st birthday, the first thing I had was my calling papers. I joined the W.LA went to work on private farm, hand milking the cows. I started at 5.30am and after milking I fed the cows and calfs and took the bull to the cows, then went on the milk round. I took 16 gals on my bike every day. Then done general work. Then started milking about 3pm. Then after tea at harvest time until 10pm. My boyfriend at the time went flying in the R.A.F and 1943 we got married. He phoned me Monday, wedding Thursday and the farmer and his wife said I helped him, they would help me. I went to work on my wedding morning at 5.30am and was home by dinner time and got married at 3pm. I had three bridesmaids, I had my reception, as he was due to go abroad he had to get in touch with his squadron, that got put off. We had about 48 hours together about 4 times. He went all over the place Africa, Egypt and finished in Italy. He came home and then after 2 1/2 years I got pregnant so I had to come off the heavy lifting. Went domestic at Campsea Ashe Hostel. I stayed there for 4 months so I could finish my 4 years.
