The second great fire of London 鈥 1941

I was living in East Putney, London, in West Hill, then a leafy country road, now a busy dual carriageway. We had a flat with a balcony in a lovely old house and garden.

The alarm siren was sounded every evening as soon as darkness fell. The German bombers came over in numbers and the 鈥淏litz鈥 continued until dawn, when the 鈥渁ll clear鈥 siren was sounded. As we left the air raid shelter in the garden we could see a red glare in the sky. On reaching our balcony the great walls of flame rising into the sky on each side of the rive Thames.

London docks were on fire! An unforgettable sight forever.
