[This story was submitted to the People’s War website by a volunteer from ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Cambridgeshire on behalf of Daphne Beckett and has been added to the site with her permission. Mrs Beckett fully understands the site’s terms and conditions.]

I went to Cottenham village school during the war, and when the siren went every child who lived near enough was able to run home. If not, they had a secure place at school — I remember mine was under the headmaster’s desk!

When I was about 10 or 11, I got a brand new leather case for my gas mask for Christmas and I was really proud of it.

There were eleven of us in the family — eleven ration books. Every week I would go and get 11 pork pies from the village hall with the ration books.
