One of my happier memories of the war was two neighbours and their two children joining me and my child to pass the time on whilst air raids were on. They used to come to my house and the children would say "Tell us about when you were a little girl", ( I was 25 at the time ) and they would sit fascinated whilst I told them of my troubles as a child, my mother having died when I was 8 years old leaving 5 children (1 older than me and 3 younger ) and I was 'farmed out' to an aunt and uncle.
The mothers used to bring eggs, sugar, marge or lard to my house and we would 'pool' ingredients and I would cook cakes and fruit pies. I had a 'Yorkist Range' with a coal oven, we all did our best tomake things go as far as possible. I made all kinds of jams and with ingredients I had never used before, rhubarb, blackberries, marrows etc. and grew many useful things in our small garden
