My Mum and my two brothers had been bombed out of our house in Ruislip. We went to stay with an aunt in Staines but we were bombed out of that one on the first night. I was beginning to think that I'd done something to offend "him"... you know it became rather personal!
As a result we moved again to another aunt Balcombe, Sussex. (Broadhurst Wood). She was a housekeeper to a doctor who was away on active service so she had a seven bedroomed house to herself. It's still there today. I've been to see it! I got moved to a little village school which was run by nuns. I'm left handed. My left hand got whacked with a cane and tied to a chair.
Now I can write with both hands!
