I have vivid memories of the Second World War. We lived in West Norwood at the time.
Our garden was too small to fit in an air-raid shelter so two shelter were built in the garden next door. To make it easier for us to reach the shelter in a hurry our neighbour had lowered the fence.
I remember the growling noise of the V1鈥檚 as they passed overhead.
It was a very tense moment if we heard their engines stop becase we knew what would come next. The V1 would dive out of the ground. Of courses we all hoped that it would hit open countryside but sadly often many were killed.
I remember the arrival of a V2 rocket. Just before it hit the ground a dog jumped into our shelter. The ground shook as the blast hit our house. We waited for what seemed like ages then suddenly a the helmet of a Air Rad Warden appeared over ther debris.
鈥淎re you alright?鈥 I remember him saying. Then came the difficult bit . We had to climb out over the wreckage and through our house which was dangerous because the walls were likely to fall in..
