I was born in August 1934 and lived in Audley Road, South Gosforth.
I started school in 1939, the year the 2nd World War began.
My memories of this were, instead of going to school (St Charles R.C. Gosforth) we were sent to a house in Audley Rd to receive our education.
I recall one night when the Germans bombed Matthew Bank, my father took us to the front door and we watched the searchlights scarring the skies, you could hear the different sounds of the aeroplanes! I also remember the Air Raid Warden coming around the back lanes shouting 鈥渓ights out, lights out鈥 and we had to draw the blackout curtains and had to go into the Air Raid Shelters which were in our back yards, two families to one shelter. The all clear would go which was great.
