Every evening, up to 10 lorries would bring personnel from Thurleigh Airfield and possibly other airfields, to Bedford at approximatley 7:30pm and park along the embankment (this was all blacked out). They would visit the public houses and cinemas, and were looked after by the military police, who had a headquarters next to the picturedrome cinema. One evening my schoolfriends and I were interested to see revolvers hanging up by the open door.
There were several clubs in Bedford which were run by the Americans on Kimbolton road corner, and another was under Longhursts and Skinners, and one at Bromham road. There was very little trouble, and they were very well behaved.
