Elizabeth brought some photographs of herself at a street-party in Wesley Place, Newcastle-under-Lyme. She is on the left in the small picture, and the gentleman standing behind was a Mr Butterworth, a wholesale grocer whose warehouse was in Brunswick Street, and who may have provided some of the goodies for the party, including jelly or blancmange, which was a treat. The fillings in the sandwiches would just be meat paste. The two larger pictures are from The Sentinel newspaper, and show the Mayor and Mayoress, Mr and Mrs Ramsbottom. He had a high-class gents' outfitters' on Cheapside. The girl with a white ribbon in her hair in front of the Mayor was an evacuee from London.
Mrs George also brought a receipt for night-school, where she started studying shorthand and typing in October 1944. The cost of 7/6 was her weekly wage at a chemist's shop, Brownings, and her employer paid it. She started work at 14 in 1943.
