When war broke out I was evacuated from my home in Essex to Ilfracombe, Devon. I went to school one day and coming home from my lunch my mother gave me my case and said you're off to Devon to be with younger sister, who had already been evacuated.
I was there during the Blitz and when I was 16 1/2 I returned to Essex.
I decided that when I became 17 I would join the forces, so when this happened I decided to join the Womens Land Army (WLA).
I was sent to a place in Oxfordshire, to a place called Chadlington, I stayed in a hostel with 30 other girls, we were allocated jobs every day some to do milking, some on the farm and so on and occasionally we'd have the RAF or the Yanks to come and help with things like haymaking. It was there I met my husband who was stationed nearby with the RAF who came from Merthyr Tydfil.
We were married after he returned from abroad in 1946 and I came to Merthyr in 1951, where I now reside.
I am now a member of the Royal British Legion where I socialise with my friends.
