Towards the end of the war, as a 5 year old child, I remember waking up one morning and looking out of the window at Kenwick Hall, Clenchwarton, Norfolk to see troops running all around. My mother lit the copper to boil water for them to use as a trade for lemonade which we had never had before. She also traded eggs, chickens, ducks and vegetables from the kitchen garden. They were there about a week and would have liked to stay longer as they ate so well! The CO told my mother that she should keep emergency provisions in a box in the cellar as Hitler was intending to make Kenwick Hall his headquarters when he first arrived in England. He had chosen this location as it could not be seen from the air and was well camouflaged all around. This was confirmed by Lord Haw Haw on the radio one evening when he told Mr Kirkham next door not to take his potatoes up this year as they would be taken up for him!
