At the beginning of the war I was working in Boroughs and Welcome where they made all the injections for the forces but I just wanted to go in the Army, I was 17 and a half years old, where I lived was getting all most every night because the planes if they had any bombs left dropped them on the way home. So they dropped them on us. So I supposed I thought I could help to do something about it so I joined the ATS. I was trained at Guildford with the men from the Royal Queens Regiment. We were drilled and went to lectures to learn about what to do if we had a gas attack and to know how to use our gas mask. I really wanted to be a driver but because you did not have a choice I was given the job as an Orderly which meant I had to help in the kitchen to get food ready for the men, then I was put in the Officers Mess, waiting on tables which I was not too pleased about, but had to make the most of it, because I thought I was still helping. As a lot of the Officers I was waiting on were helping to plan the last big fight which helped to end the war in Europe.
