The following story has been added to the website by 大象传媒 Radio Cornwall Action Producer Nina Davey, on behalf of the author John Parkin who understands the site鈥檚 terms and conditions.
I was an agricultural engineer during the war and was based in mid Cornwall. At the outset of war farm land was overrun by rabbits and hedgerows desperately needed pruning. The Government saw the population needed feeding and decided potatoes were to be the main crops for people and animals. Potatoes were tilled in every available patch to feed the nation. Potatoes were dyed blue if they were to be given to the animals, I assume this was to stop people taking them and eating them. Pigs were fed boiled potatoes.
