Story told to CHARLES DINSDALE
At the very first Air Raid warning of the War I was so scared I was first into the Air Raid shelter. We lived down Wingfield Road, Bilton Grange and the Air Raid shelter was at the back of the house. The shelter was dark, eerie, covered in mud, cold and damp with an unusual musty smell.
Dad was away working. My sisters Mary and Peggy were evacuated to Leven and Doncaster leaving just me and my Mam.
Mam came into the shelter and we sat and cuddled. Five minutes later we heard someone coming up the garden path and could hear a dog. Mam and I went to open the door and saw Gran and Grandad stood with their dog Paddy on a lead and both were wearing gas masks saying "We couldn't see." Mam told them to take them off - much to their relief and much laughter.
