Through the Barbed Wire (A rendezvous between a prisoner of war and a teenage evacuee).

Young man you look so handsome, yet just like any other
Because you are a mother's son, a sweetheart and a brother.

Like me obeying the rules as you really have no choice
No loud 'I love you' but I catch your whispering voice

Far away from home as I am too I'm sure it makes you sad
On the day this ol war ends we'll be happy and so glad.

The other side of the fence you stand, it's no fault of your own
I didn't ask for this either, oh to be free to go home.

Your family's across the water, mine's in dear London town
I think wars are crazy and its really got me down

Leastways you're out of the fighting, bombs shrapnel and the blast
A prisoner in a foreign land you'll find yourself outcast.

No love , no kisses and all these rules, like it's all I've known
They could have sat down to talk about it and left us both at home.

The Evacuees Homecoming

Ooh its exciting at this crowded station
Cos we've journeyed from across the nation
For all evacuees in this welcoming hall
The balloons flags and streamers say it all.
Cor it's super to see the long tables are laid
With lots of buns cakes biscuits and lemonade
I'm likely to daydream if I wait too long
For the delicious treats to be passed along
It's thrilling to be home in London at last
now the dreary war years are all in the past
Its goodbye to the gas masks, bombs and V2s
The blackout ration books and tiring queues
The flames of the Blitz and London burning
Evacuation, missing Mama, home and yearning
Playing in the fields now a yesterday's scene
Cos I'm real grown up, just reached thirteen
In other follks homes you can't do as you like
but oh the fun of whizzing downhill on a bike
and tobogganing rides in the winter snow
The more riding with us the faster we'd go!
Picking mushrooms at dawn and dodging the cows
and nights in the raid shelter shivering for hours
Children need roots and a home that's for sure
So when I'm grown up, I'll vote for No War
To remember the scary times, that's my plea
Never a next time, it's much better you see.
Wow! I nearly missed the jelly and buns galore
You won't catch me daydreaming here any more.

When the party's over, I'll leave with my friends
Hoping for peace and happiness that never ends.

Victory Parades in London

Bravely coming through the rationing, bombs and Blitz
And six years of utilities without luxury or glitz
Remembering lives lost here and on distant lands
Our hearts touched by sorrow as we listen to the bands
So we've waited all night to get these good views
Climbing on ledges and lampposts and famous statues
The War's over for real this is no charade
Hear the exciting cheers for the Victory Parade
Many waving flags and clicking cameras abound
Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen are marching around
Nations parade to tunes of bugle and drum
The crowds singing the War songs adds to the fun
Celebration parties in streets throughout the night
As bonfires and fireworks bring the sky alight
But the sparkle is fleeting and quick to cease
Whilst our hearts fill with hope for a lasting peace
For our children and grandchildren we pray 'La Dolce Vita'
From love that's life giving there is nothing sweeter.

A Trilogy
Part One: The Last Post

The soldier falls on foreign terrain
As blood seeps through his wounded side
His face contorted with searing pain
Quickly weakening, ah such fate betide

Midst haze of smoke and bullets flying
The barrage of conflict is unceasing
Troops advancing as he lays dying
Without comforting or pain easing.

Weakened he lays in the rain soaked mud
His mind swirling with fear and dread
Steeped in rivulets of trickling blood
His ebbing life seeks death's embrace ahead

Memories before him a reminder of bliss
He calls in vain midst pain filled sighs
Longing for his sweetheart's gentle kiss
Til unconsciousness quells his cries

Movements around him too late the tread
The kind stretcher bearers he does not see
Or sip the water as they raise his head
Nor utter a sound to tell of his agony

Alas too late to save the young life
As he lays gasping for one last breath
Soon to journey from all earthly strife
Awaiting only the cold kiss of death

Never again to run in a bayonet charge
Amidst roar of machine guns tamks and shells
His young life taken for a victorious mirage
To join higher ranks free from earthly hells

Comrades return to salute the brave soldier
The buglers heartfelt emotions are uppermost
Death holds no ambition or his growing older
Only heralding with the sounds of the last post.

Part 2: The Lost Horizon

She threw down the crumpled note, alas the fateful news,
Her wan face showed heartbreak as she knelt in the pews
Weeping over the casket she kissed her lover's face
Felled by the bullet both robbed of love's embrace
Oh how sweet the year of true love in their teens
In battle his life taken for war's mirage it seems
Grief leaves her clinging to memories in her heart
Recalling springtime rendezvous, promising never to part
Whilst golden daffodils and bluebell woodland bliss
Vowing to stay together was their ever loving tryst
Ah his fragrant gift of roses a symbol of their dreams
Idyllic hours by shimmering pools and cascading streams
Romance neath the moonlit sky 'oh deep, loves enthrall'
Hearts beating loudly such rapture she could recall
Til blowing with the wind of change came a call to arms
Tearful was the parting a cruel wrench from love's charms
Wars separation touches all, those who have loved and not
Brave soldier on foreign land slain by a fatal shot
The future still untreaded in time her pain may ease
Her lover rests on homeland soil in eternal peace.

Part 3: War's Aftermath

In the distance oer yonder hill is seen
The War Memorial on the village green
A young girl approaches the honoured ground
On this November day, poppy wreaths surround

Tenderly she places a small wooden cross
With a poppy symbolising her heartfelt loss
Mourning her soldier with grief in her heart
Kneeling in prayer her deep feelings to impart

Though slain in battle in foreign terrain
She promises his death will never be in vain
For each life lost in Flanders a poppy will grow
And from many aching hearts goodness will flow

By dedicating her life to humanitarian needs
And helping refugees their suffering to ease
With the world's prayers answered War could be no more
Everlasting Faith's protection, Peace and Amour

...............................

And finally, Outcasts

Please Leaders and Government, think carefully before
You press the button to start off a war.

Let's mix in together, sharing food and all we've been blest
Surely mercy comes cheaper and forgiveness is best

History has shown that our God always wins through
His teaching that we are all his children could avoid this to-do

Please share out the goodies between thee, them and me
Protect our children from being 'just an evacuee'

Oh Lord, please help us all in this nuclear age
One or all to be blasted is such an outrage.

Last time was tough; I've been through it before
Your gift of life is so precious, oh please protect us, oh please protect us
From missiles and being no more......
