My dad worked at George Wards shoe manufactureres at Barwell, Leicestershire. He was also in the homeguard and this involved patrolling Earl Shilton and taking part in talks.
They would have been the defence for the country if we'd been invaded.
My mum was in the shoe industry as well making ladies shoes.
I was at school.
None of us had very much because there was nothing to have, so no-one was different.
I would walk home to have my dinner from school.
The army took over the school meals place.
They were stationed here, so we either took sandwiches or walked home.
I would walk home and it was a 2 mile journey for me in the middle of the day.
There was quite a lot of activity in the village with the forces being stationed here.
