I was 13 years old, still at school, and we had evacuees studying with us. We only studied for half a day, and after that we used to go to the Sandunes at Squires Gate. Blackpool had only had one air raid, and I remember being very exited about going to the shelter. The main reason was because my mum bought us chocolates, in case we had to spend a lot of time downstairs, and I couldn鈥檛 wait to try them. But we鈥檇 only been there for 5 min. There was no bombing that time, warning was cleared off, and we had to go home, to bed. I didn鈥檛 have any chocolates.
In the afternoons after school we used to go to the Sandunes, off to the south of Blackpool, which were the huge heaps of sand, where the blueberries had grown. The pupils picked blueberries. We thought it was all great fun because we had only had half a day at school.
The illuminations were all taken down during the war. They were stored in an old tram depot shelter.
