When William Joyce was captured by British Troops he received a bullet wound. As a result he spent some time recovering in the Lueneberg Military Hospital, before being sent back to England where he was put on trial for high treason for which he famously received the death penalty.
During his time in Lueneberg hospital however I nursed him back to health. This was a tricky business at times as some of my other patients, wounded Irish soldiers, wanted to shoot him! Such was the strength of feeling at the time about William Joyce, or Lord Haw-Haw as he became known.
One day we suddenly realised that someone had jumped out of the hospital window - we all thought it was William Joyce trying to escape. However when we looked we saw that it was a Romanian sergeant. Observing these events from his hospital bed, William Joyce simply said;
'Sister sit down. I'm not stupid enough to jump out of the window!'
