We had the ration books, I remember once, we could only get a tiny bit of butter, I was in the queue waiting for my share, and when I鈥檇 got it I walked away and went down one of the side streets, and there was a nice little pat of butter in brown paper. I looked all around to see if there was anybody about. I thought, 鈥淥h some poor soul鈥檚 lost their butter.鈥 I went home and told my mother and he said , 鈥淲ell if you didn鈥檛 see anybody there鈥檚 nothing you can do about it. You could have said to anyone; Is this yours?鈥 I said 鈥淲ell I didn鈥檛 see a soul but someone must have lost it.鈥 So we had an extra two ounces of butter that week.
