We weren鈥檛 all that far from Coventry. The night it was bombed, my aunt and I were sleeping on a mattress in the cubby hold under the stairs where we went during the air raids we heard loud crunches as bombs landed we hoped it wasn鈥檛 in Birmingham. The next day we heard that it was Coventry. My father worked there and he told me afterwards how dreadful it all was the next morning, as the place was practically flattened - gas pipes leaking, water everywhere, people digging in bombed houses for their relatives, firemen rushing everywhere, absolute chaos. Of course the cathedral was bombed and they found pieces of charred wood which they formed into a cross and placed it amongst the ruins. Some people coined the phrase 鈥渃oventrated鈥 to mean absolutely devastated.
