A Minor Incident
I was evacuated to Whylle, South Wales and the next village to me was called Ynysddu. We used to get air raids in South Wales and invariably what they were after were the coal mines and ammunition factories. Several bombs were dropped and every one missed its target. One of them did not explode as it hit a rubbish dump. We learned afterwards that if it had gone of it would have wiped out most of the village. The Bomb Disposal Unit dug it out and defused it. The bomb was then put on display on a trolley and everyone was asked to buy a sixpenny stamp to stick on the bomb to send it back to Hitler. It was 8’ long, 2’ wide and there wasn’t a spare inch to show after all the stamps had been stuck on it. The money from the purchase of these stamps went to the war effort.
