This story was submitted by Chloe Broadley of the CSV 大象传媒 Coventry and Warwickshire Action Desk on behalf of Mrs.Peggy Caudwell and has been added to the site with her permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

My husband was a Craftsman in the R.E.M.E. He went straight from the U.K. to Sicily - where he got sandfly fever, which was treated with nothing but Aspro!
He remembered seeing "walking wounded" boarding a hospital ship. One man was shouting "No, I don't want to go! I don't want to go home!" He didn't seem injured, but was obviously barmy, so they came down from the ship and took him aboard. Later it was realised that there was nothing wrong with him, he had just "worked his ticket" back to Britain!
His unit were on repairing guns - sometimes they were still red hot when they started work on them. Once, when a gang of them were coming back from the mobile baths they were attacked by planes, some of the men got under lorries. The lorries were loaded with something acid - when they were hit everything went up in flames.
Alan made a broadcast message home out there. These men had been in the thick of it. A mate put his name in the draw and it came out. His wife was notified by the 大象传媒 - it was to be transmitted on May 29th. He spoke to his wife, and mentioned her mother. When he came on his own mother said "Now, listen to him let me down!" - which he did, by calling her "Ma"! His brother , at home because of being in a reserved occupation, listened, waited, thought he wasn't going to come on, so he switched off - and missed the broadcast. His sister-in-law got upset because she wasn't mentioned.
Alan said he never regretted the time he spent in the Army - he valued the experiences he got there.
