I'm from Milnathort in Scotland. I used to work on a farm before the war and I joined the ATS until I was old enough to sign up. Di d my initial training in Inverness. Went to Oswestry to do radar training and joined a mixed, heavy ack ack battery and served in S. England (London area). The flying bombs were on the go then.
At the end of 1944 I was moved to Antwerp, Belgium, for the same flying bombs. The battery there was stationed in the America section. Whent he VE day celebrations began on 7th May... all the ships in the dock began blowing their horns and we were all woken up! Our unit wasn't stood down until 13th May.
After that we were transferred to Deurne aerodrome, under canvas, where we dismantled and cleaned our equipment, packed it away for the UK. By this time, married members got sent home for demob. Singles, like myself, got preference for jobs like drivers, signals and police.
My friend Peggy and I joined the police. We were sent to the BAOR for 6-8wks training. That was the start of my career. We were sent to an internment camp in Neimunster, in Hamburg, to look after ex-concentration camp staff, and ended up at Nuremburg war crime tribunals. There are photos of myself with some war criminals.
We signed up for a year, because they were short of girls. Came out in April 1947, returned to village, but felt lost - like a fish out of water.
