As a small boy I watched airplanes at Seighford and English Elec. was bombed. One fell on the play area, one bounced off the girder and went back outside. We played in the streets; girls- skipping and the boys- tin can Tommy, hide and seek, marbles, whip and top, there was no cars.
On Saturday 8th October 2005 a re-enactment took place outside my house where I had lived in the war and I had attended the original party. Games, fancy dress judged by the Mayor. My wife and I won third prize as Zulu Warriors partnered by Jean Fallons who was a Hawaiian Girl. The tables were not in our street but in Bagnalls (factory) canteen. Sandwiches, homemade cakes, jelly. Adults went to pubs and the children to bed.I didn't notice the food shortage as Mum made it go around and Dad had an allotment. Mom worked in a pub called the Queens Head which was used by American's billeted at Tech. Occasionally gave butter etc and they sometimes came to tea on a Sunday afternoon- usually two or three. all the kids would ask 'got any gum, chum?'
The King and Queen visited Stafford in about '44 or '45 and we were all marched down from St Paul's to Lichfield Rd outside the White Lion Pub (now lost) and stood waving with our Union Jacks.
