During the Blitz I was cycling along the Cambridge Arterial Road, Bush Hill Park, London, to visit my best pal, Jim. To my dismay the siren sounded so I pedalled as fast as I could to get to the Anderson Shelter in his garden. Suddenly I heard a "rat-tat-tat" and a German bomber zoomed down and started to machine-gun the road behind me. Fear led extra speed to my pedals and I reached his house just ahead of the bomber which continued its deadly fire up the road. I threw my bike on the ground and flung myself into the shelter - scared but unharmed. Looking at my white face Jim's dad said "You look as though you need a brandy!" and a small 12 year old boy gratefully gulped it down!
