I lived through the London Blitz and V1 bombing (doddlebugs) and v2 rockets that hit London. The doddlebugs were the most fearsome weapons, flying bombs that destroyed my home and killed several young friends.
The most vivid memory was on June 16 1944 when a cloud of these flying bombs first atacked London. It was my sister's birthday and we thought these were British fighter planes. The engines stopped and they glided down and hit homes, factories and schools. My sister's best friend saw her mother killed before her eyes as she pushed her daughter under the kitchen sink and saved her life: she unfortunately was too late to save herself.W
hen the engines stopped you knew you were going to be hit. The rockets (V2s) hit my house, and the Woolwich Arsenal. I still have the scar in my hand of a piece of V2 rocket. The scene in the hospital of workers with gaping holes in their back and limbs missing will live with me forever.
Evacuation, to Torquay, Barrow in Furness,
and Kent. We were machine-gunned walking in a Kent Lane near a RAF airfield, and moved from there as it was unsafe.
I could go on, but need more time.
