I was 8 or 9 and in those days we walked to school, when the air raids started, the teacher gave us a bit of chalk, and told us to count the paces to school and going home to put a chalk mark on a wall half way home the idea being if the sirens sounded and we were past the halfway mark we were to run to the school shelter, and if we hadent reached it ,we were to run home. At 5 mins to nine ,there were 250/300 children round a corner waiting to see if the siren would go before the school bell,if it had done there would have been one almighty scattering of kids johngparker
