My twins were 'war babies'. Practically everything was rationed. Meat was in very short supply. You could not go to any butcher, but had to register with the one of your own choice. Mine was very good and would give me a 'marrow bone' which I boiled with veg for the babies. One week, as he gave me my rations, he said quietly 'I have put a bit extra in the bottom of your bag' Oh wonderful!, a bit of liver?, a sausage or two? or, bliss itself, a big chump chop?
Sadly, when I found my 'bit of extra' it was a very large bloodshot cow's eye, looking up at me as much as to say 'Well, I shall see you through the week!'
