Harry Ford, the local greengrocer, was doing his weekly rounds one day, along Railway Terrace in Kings Langley, with his trusty horse and cart. The cottages along the Terrace faced the gravel pits, which were separated from the road only by an iron fence.
As he was calling at one lady's house the air raid sirens went off and she invited him in until it was over. First he tended to his horse, tying him up to the iron fence and filling his nosebag with food.
Once inside he heard a big explosion. A bomb had been dropped in the gravel pits opposite. He rushed back outside to check on his horse, who was still eating and standing as though nothing had happened!
However, all sorts of fish from the ponds in the gravel pits had been thrown up in the air and many had landed in the back of Mr Ford's cart. No-one remembers whether he went on to sell the fish!
