First of all we landed on Port-en-besson on June 10th 1944 and we had to make our way to a village called Cussy. Cows in the field there were tethered, at night time the cooks put out a churn of coco, it was so strong you could stand a spoon up in it. So after a while I thought to me'self I would have to get something to make it drinkable, being a Dorset boy my name was 'Sweed' so I worked out the time for when the lady came with her horse and trap to milk the cows, I decided that I would have to get there before her to milk the cows. Having done this several times we were well and properly organised for supper.
One night when I was hiding in a hedgerow I noticed this farm lady came along and then looked at the cows udder and found that a lot of milk had been milked out. So I thought I'd better take a low profile on it. A couple of days laetr the duty Corporal came to me and he said 'Sweed, the CO would like to see you' I said 'What have I done now, why is it always me?' So the duty Corporal took me to the CO's tent and the CO said 'Sweed there's only one person who can milk a cow and I believe it's you'. So after a friendly talking to I had to admit that it was me each night milking the cow for us in the tent. Eventually he said to me, he dismissed the duty Corporal, as he walked out aswell he said to me 'Sweed you can stay' and he said to me quietly 'I shall be entertaining one or two of my friends in a couple of nights time do you think you could get me some milk?' I said 'I think Sir that that could be arranged' 'Good boy' he said and then he said 'Now you can go'.
