I was aged about ten. My father was away in the forces, and my Uncle Jack had been left in charge. Unfortunately, he failed to pay the rent, and we were thrown out. My mum took us to her parents to stay. I can remember lying on a mattress in my Grandmothers room. Then my aunt turned up with her children; that made thirteen of us in the house. Luckily, it was a smallholding, and so we were able to eat.
I remember we used to help get the cows in for Grandad, and were rewarded with a peppermint for our troubles!
I can remember an aircraft coming down nearby once. My mum threw water on it, which wasn鈥檛 supposed to be the thing to do. I remember that we managed to retrieve the parachute silk from it.
My other Grandmother had fourteen evacuees living with her at any one time. She also had Prisoners of War working on the farm. I can always remember the toilet block as it had three different sizes of seat to accommodate all the different ages!
