I was just old enough to join the A.T.S and started my training in Honiton at the beginning of August, 1945. I was not a drinker but had been allowed the occasional glass of cider, so when VJ night came along I went with friends to Honiton town to celebrate. I don't have a strong recollection of what happened, but apparently after a few glasses of Scrump, I danced in the middle of the street encouraged by friends and locals. This was behaviour not permitted to one wearing uniform and I was arrested by the dreaded female Redcaps. I was on a charge and marched before our commanding officer the next day. I explained that I had only been drinking cider and didn't realise that scrumpy had quite a high alcoholic content. Fortunately the commanding officer accepted my explanation, she warned me about the dangers of drinking too much and dismissed the charge. I have not had one glass of cider since that day.
