I was in Pembroke Dock when the oil tanks were bombed. This was shortly after Dunkirk and I can remember the sight. Two airplanes went by, the first one bombed it and the second dropped incendiaries and set it one fire.
The smell was pretty grim and there was a pall of black smoke over the town for at least three weeks. I remember going to school and by the time I got there I would be covered in black soot spots.
Firemen were drafted in from everywhere, including Gloucestershire to fight the fire and they were machine gunned while they were doing this.
It was really sad to see a procession of five coffins going up to the cemetery.
The fire was eventually extinguished by foam in a matter of hours and I belief that it was the first time that foam was ever used.
