I started school in 1942 and used to walk to school. If the siren went, we had to decide whether we were half way to school or nearest building.
When a bomb dropped in our road, the windows and several walls came down. We were then evacuated to Nottingham. I remember one room with a coal fire for heating in a small village school.
My father was a plumber and was sent to various airfields to repair planes and get them back flying. He went to Scotland, Cornwall, Nottingham and Croydon airport which was badly bombed.
My mother lost two brothers on the same day - 9 November 1942. One we have learned had "no known grave" but his name is on a memorial at Brookwood, Middlesex.
