What I can remember of VJ night at the age of six years was my mother making celluloid hats for my three sisters, they were all brightly coloured and see through. My sisters wore long skirts and high heels with pencil lines up the back of their legs to look like stockings. We all went off to a local village green where there people jiving, singing, everyone was linking arms. For me to see all this my dad put me on his shoulders. Everybody brought food that had come from their rations. Everybody was excited and singing. My memory of rations was everybody had their own jars being a family of six each one was named. There was sugar, two ounces of sweets a week. These were obtained using ration books.
