I was in Belgium learning languages just before war was declared. It surprised me how unconcerned the people seemed. They appeared to bury their heads in the sand preferring to believe the war just wouldn't happen.
Even after Poland was invaded they seemed to be of the view that it was nothing to do with them what was happening a long way away - or so they thought.
