I was living in Battersea, South London with my husband Tommy. We were in the shelter and the Germans were dropping bombs, time bombs all over the place. When it was quiet, Tommy left the shelter to have a look around. He noticed this great big black patch on the ground, right near our house.
"Lilly, come out here and have a look at this" he shouts. So I come out and stand in front of the shelter as he creeps up for a closer look. Just then an Air Raid Warden, across the road shouts "What the bloody hell you doing here?"
"Well we live here" Tommy yells back.
"Do you see that there," he says "that's a time bomb, it can go off any second and take you with it. You shouldn't be here anyway, this whole place has been cleared out since one o'clock this morning!"
"We didn't know," says Tommy "we've been in the shelter!"
The warden tells us to get dressed, I was only wearing a coat and some slippers, he then takes us to a big primary school down the road. We lived in that school for three weeks, sleeping on mattresses which were all over the floor. The place was so packed with people, all of whom would bring their drinks with them back from the pub. There were more pint glasses in that school than what were in that pub. Some time later the council said that if anybody could get away to another part of the country, where it might be safer, and they would pay for it. Tommy contacted his mum and she said come up to Gateshead, "Just for a break," she said. So we hopped on a train and stayed with his mother. For something that was supposed to be just a 'break', I've been here ever since. The tyneside Cockney
