In I941, my mum and I were living in flats in the centre of Bristol, right under the flight path of the Luftwaffe bombers, that regularly visited the docks. When the sirens went, Mum and I, with my cat, would rush down to the central hallway of our block of flats, where everyone huddled for safety.
Since I was just nine years of age, I didn’t really understand what was happening. In fact, I delighted in sliding down the banisters to the hall and often, unknown to my mum, crept outside to watch the raid. The docks and surrounding area would be well alight and the noise of the bombs dropping and enormous flashes struck me as a monster firework display. Even my black cat took all the commotion in her stride!
