This story has been added to The People鈥檚 War Website by CSV Volunteer Olivia Davey on behalf of the author Fred Richards who understands the site鈥檚 terms and conditions.
My Grandfather was a postman in St Ives all his working life and fortunately he was a very strong swimmer and liked fishing.
One night during the Blackout he and a friend were fishing on Smeatons Pier. Unfortunately Grandad stepped forward one step too far when he felt a pull on the line and fell over into the sea. He was wearing his long Post Office Overcoat and heavy boots. Fortunately he knew the Harbour very well being a very strong swimmer (having saved seven lives) and was able to find the ladders on the Pier wall, to climb out.
His friend accompanied him home to Tregenna Terrace and when Granny opened the door his friend said 鈥淗ere you are Mrs Richards. Here is your Husband. (Dripping Wet) and here is the fish he caught" - I don't know what the fish was but it was very small.
